joe purdy-only four seasons [2006]

this guy has me hooked. joe purdy has only been recording as a solo artist since the year 2001 and this year he'd finishing his tenth album, sixth in two years. this album, from early 2006 has some great songs on it. joe toured last year as a part of tom mcrae's hotel cafe tour. i might say that his music (minus the voice) sounds like tom mcrae if tom was on prozak. i would probably draw comparisons closer to ryan adams or bruce springsteen. nonetheless, he's great. if you are fans of the show lost you might be interested to know that joe's song "wash away" was used at the end of one of the episodes of season one. check out the songs, "cinderella and the a-train", "the city", and "why you".

iron and wine-in the reins EP [2005]

this is my favorite work by the band iron and wine. it's only a seven song EP released in 2005 with the band calexico. all of the songs were written by the man behind iron and wine, sam beam. most of the early releases by iron and wine are much more melodic and acoustic where this album i think they stretched into a new genre, adding the hyphen from folk to folk-rock. great stuff. if you like ryan adams or black rebel motorcycle club, this is has a similar ring only the singer whispers a lot more....check out "red dust", "16, maybe less", "he lays in the reins".

michael jackson-invincible [2001]

i can't believe i waited this long to get one of my favorite albums from one of my favorite artists. i apologize. oh, and did i mention that without question he is the greatest performer of all time. all time people. i always like to get in a debate about who the most recognizable person on the earth today is. what i'm saying is: if you were to poll every person on this planet today who would the most people recognize. bush? hitler? i think that person is michael jackson. anyway, this album was a number one in the world and i think it deserves every single bit of that title. no one keeps up like michael. one of his earlier albums "thriller" came out in 1982. that is, the songs you recognize and people still thump in their cars today (me included) like "billy jean", "beat it" and of course "thriller". came out before anyone else had thought or rap beats. you may not agree with all the things i said but as a human you must at least appreciate genius when you see it. check out the songs, "whatever happens", "you rock my world", and "unbreakable". oh, i almost forgot, i'll DEFINATELY be posting his newest album when it comes out in early '08 so be looking for that....

  1. unbreakable

tom mcrae-all maps welcome [2005]

i can't help it. i'm reposting a different album from an artist i've already told you about. and i have TONS of great new music that i really want to get on here. he's that good though. seriously. i posted tom mcrae's new album "king of cards" early in my bloggin days :) this album, his third release of four is the second best of the four (this is the order: 1-self-titled, 2-all maps welcome, 3-just like blood, 4-king of cards; this isn't subjective either, it's the cold-hard truth). he is one of the most inspiring artist i have ever listened to. not to mention tom as a lyricist (check out the lyrics in 'girl who falls down stairs'). he has such a solid portfolio of work that he could end his career as an artist now and i'd isten to his four albums over and over and over. incredible. check out the songs, "vampire heart"<---one of my top five favorite songs....ever, "girl who falls down stairs", and "silent boulevard"<----that was hard to choose, 1-11 are all incredible.

girls in hawaii-from here to there [2005]

not just perverts, these guys are also great musicians. hailing from belgium, the band girls in hawaii have a quality album here. i first picked this up almost two years ago. this is there only lp release to date and it's definately worth a listen. in belgium this band is supposedly the latest "great sensation". wouldn't surprise me though since almost no one could name a great band from belgium....(no offense if you know some)...either way, this album has some great songs. check out "found in the ground", "flavor", and "time to forgive the winter".

jeff hanson-jeff hanson [2005]

listen carefully. pay attention or you may be very confused. scroll down to the bottom of this post and click on the preview to the song, "this time it will". now listen for about 30 seconds. jeff hanson is the name of a solo singer/songwriter from the northern-midwest. a male. not a joke. and this guy has talent. i heard of his work from a friend in early 2006 and actually saw him in concert at kilby in slc in feb. or march of last year...can't remember exactly. but trust me, he's a dude. in fact, he has the build of a linebacker which makes it all the more weird, i know. but it's worth looking into one of the two great solo albums he's released. check out "this time it will", "welcome here", and "long overdue".

sigur ros-takk [2005]

maybe the most amazing concert i've ever been to was sigur ros at the depot in slc in may of 2006. it's hard to put into words what that show was like. it was seriously like an out of body experience. amazing. this band is completely individual. jonsi, the lead singer and guitarist, actually plays the guitar with a violin bow. the music is like a story with an intro, build, climax and resolution. this album, takk, was their latest studio album release (they just released an acoustic and compilation cd yesterday). if you've never heard sigur ros, you MUST at least listen to this preview [note:i couldn't include the whole song due to size so it's cut down...sorry]. check out the songs, "seaglopur", "glosoli", and "hoppipolla".

honeycut-the day i turned to glass [2006]

i first heard the title track of this album about six months ago from the radio stations KCRW in L.A. it's a great song and i probably listened to it about 50 times one week. after that i didn't listen to the song and for a while i even forgot about it entirely. a couple of weeks ago i picked up their debut album, "the day i turned to glass". i've been nothing but impressed since. this album fulfills some hope in me that white people still have rythym...anyway, great album! check out the songs "the day i turned to glass", "shadows", and "exodus honey".

sondre lerche-duper session [2006]

sondre lerche is norwegian rocker. his first album came out in 2001 when he was only 19 years old. he has put our some great music...i highly recommend it to any of you brit-pop fans(check out the song, "two way monologues). this album, however, is nothing like his other music. that is what makes it so amazing. this album is all JAZZ. he does an amazing job of writing and covering some great jazz music. it has a great feel and is one of those albums you can't listen to without snapping your fingers. check out "the more i see you", "night and day", and "minor detail".

stars-in our bedroom after the war [2007]

three days ago i had never even heard of stars. in fact, i can't even remember how i found them. apparently they're not too secret, my little brother knew who they were. either way they have a great sound. i have really been diggin this album the last couple of days. i can't really term the sound of their music very well. i would say they are something like a cross of the postal service and r.e.m. hmm...that may not do it either...oh well. check out "take me to the riot", "the ghost of geneva heights", and "barricade".

ryan adams-gold [2001]

anyone with any remote interest in folk-rock this is the cream of the modern-day crop. ryan adams writes songs that should have been written the year he was born and he does it better than almost anybody else. this is my favorite of all his work. and believe me, he has put out a bit of music. since the year 2000 he has released nine albums. granted some of those weren't solo albums, three were with the backing band the cardinals. anywho, this album is fantastic. check out the songs, "new york, new york"<---previewed below, "answering bell", and "firecracker". oh, and if you recognize song 7, "when the stars go blue" as a tim mcgraw song, it's actually a ryan adams original.

the hush sound-like vines [2006]

absolutely no idea where i got this album. none whatsoever. i've traded music with a lot of people lately and who knows who gave me what. this one came up on shuffle on the ol' ipod the other day and i thought it was kinda nice. this bands seems to have potential to be trendy so if they are and i just don't know about it, please, let me know, i'll stop listening. what i mean by that is if 90% of the eighth graders in your local jr high know this band, let's delete it from this site. if not, then hey, it's a pretty good album. i really like the two first songs on the album. check them out.
